Internists (or Doctors of Internal Medicine) focus their treatment on adult diseases, and also do not treat specific women's conditions (such as in gynecology or obstetrics).

Internists may practice general internal medicine, however many often go on to subspecialize in a variety of different medical areas. Internists are often called in as consultants to other physicians when diagnosis are uncertain or difficult to obtain.
